Hello fellow gardeners,
First up, kudos to those brave gardeners who donned rubber boots and raincoats for the Hastings Garden opening two weekends ago. If you didn't make it out, here is a little update:
PREPPING YOUR BEDS
To get your beds ready for planting, I encourage you to spend a little time tilling the soil, mixing in the straw (or layering it lower down to encourage drainage), and adding a layer of compost. You will find the compost on a blue tarp at the east end of the garden, but it won't last forever!
SEEDS AND STARTS
There are lots of places in the neighbourhood to buy seeds and starts. I like to go to Figaro's Garden (at 3rd and Victoria) because of their organic seed selection and expertise, and also the community gardener discount. Note that the discount is 10% and not 20% (as I suggested in an earlier email) -- apologies for any confusion there.
The water is now set up for the garden, and it's a little different this year. The main ON / OFF switch for all four hoses is located on the Hastings Street side of the garden, in the eastern corner, with the word WATER painted on it. To water your beds, go to the main switch and turn the handle to ON, then find the hose closest to your beds. When you're finished watering, please turn the main switch back to OFF before you leave. This is to ensure that the garden doesn't flood because of a surprise leak in one of the hoses.
The 'garden shed' is located under the Garden Sign in the middle of the garden. In the shed you will find buckets (for moving compost and dirt), trowels (for digging in seeds and starts), and one larger shovel (for heavier lifting). The combination for the new lock is 000. I'll ask that you treat the tools well, rinse them with the hose, and return them to the shed when you're finished. To lock the lock, simply scramble the numbers up.
As a reminder, we ask that you only put garden waste in the green waste bins. This means weeds, off-cuts, and any leftover straw. No dirt, please, and definitely no garbage or food scraps. Thanks!
For anyone who missed the Opening and still wants to pay their 2015 fees with cash, I'll be in the garden this Wednesday (tomorrow, April 8th) from 3pm to 5pm.
Cheques can be made out to Shifting Growth Garden Society and mailed to #210 - 128 W. Hastings St. Vancouver BC, V6B1G8. Please note the garden name and plot #'s on the subject line.
