Hello fellow gardeners,
Now is a great time to start planting your garden beds, and what better way to ring in the growing season than with a weekend Garden Opening.
The official garden opening for the Hastings North garden is this Saturday, April 2nd from 1pm to 3pm.
Joining us this year will be local sweethearts Figaro's Garden (http://shiftinggrowth.us3.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=764a1db14c3c23e7a865a5214&id=8735a09633&e=46b9d57ae1) . They'll bring seeds, starts and bulbs to sell, and answer all your gardening questions.
Meanwhile, we'll set up a paint station for gardeners to decorate their own garden bed placards, and we'll have maps and registration info for new gardeners unsure where they're beds are.
This is a great time to meet your neighbours and to plant your first seeds. It's also an opportunity for those wishing to pay their Annual Garden Fee by cash or cheque to do so!
The Garden Opening is our final deadline for registration and payment for 2016. Click here to REGISTER AND PAY FOR YOUR HASTINGS COMMUNITY GARDEN MEMBERSHIP 2016 (http://shiftinggrowth.us3.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=764a1db14c3c23e7a865a5214&id=de5f04f201&e=46b9d57ae1) . The fee for the upcoming year is $15 per bed.
If we have not received your registration or payment by April 2nd we will move your beds along to another gardener on our wait list.
There is now a large delivery of compost for you to make use of from our friends at Net Zero Waste (http://shiftinggrowth.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=764a1db14c3c23e7a865a5214&id=4faa8d39f5&e=46b9d57ae1) . This is pretty much the caviar of the compost world––have at it, but make sure there's enough for everyone.
Water is on and hoses are out! The central ON/OFF control for all hoses is located near the southeast corner of the garden. Please make sure the water is turned OFF before you leave!
If you discover a leaky hose or broken nozzle, please email me immediately so we can get the issue solved pronto.
SHED COMBO LOCK
The combination for the lock on the shed is 000. Please make sure to lock the shed when you're done using the buckets and shovels.
GARDEN TIPS: PREPPING YOUR BEDS
Here is a simple play-by-play of how to get your beds ready for spring planting:
- Clear off any leftover mulch and/or dead plant material and put in the compost.
- Use a shovel to turn the dirt: this helps prevents compaction.
- Add a bucket or two of compost and stir into the top layer of dirt.
- Plant your seeds or starts. Popsicle sticks are a good way to mark where you've hidden those seeds so you don't dig them up accidentally.
- Lightly water to kick-start germination. Be sure to check out the ** Garden Bed Allocation table (http://shiftinggrowth.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=764a1db14c3c23e7a865a5214&id=cfaf0283f3&e=46b9d57ae1) to confirm your bed numbers for 2016, as there were a few errors in the January version. Any questions or concerns, let me know.
Hope to see you all this Saturday!
